From success to significance
For most of my life up to this point I’ve been driven by the need to succeed – to do well – to be big, the best, the top. But from my mid-forties I’ve been feeling something that’s taken me awhile to put language to. Here was the shift: – I didn’t want to conquer the world any more – I wanted to leave a legacy. I wanted to move beyond doing things that were successful to doing things that are significant. And they are significant because they are shaping the future - because they extend the influence of my life beyond myself - because I’m no longer focused on the success of my own life but about giving it away to help others towards their destiny.
But for some of us our biggest problem is we have forgotten who we are. God says we are to live like pilgrims passing through this life but we are acting like permanent residents!! Before you were even born, God put a piece of eternity in your heart (that means He put a part of His will and purpose into your heart and sent you to the earth). He birthed you into a certain time of history because that’s when what He put inside you is most needed on the earth!!
God sealed the certainty of the eternal destiny for all who believe in Him and you are supposed to be living with this “certainty” inside you. The life we choose to live is powerfully influenced by the certainty of our future!! We can live in time in the light of a certain eternity and because we know where we are going we can live life to the full NOT HELD IN SLAVERY.
Christ was secure in His identity and self worth by the revelation of who He was before the Father. This security then released Him to show His disciples the ‘full extent of His love’ i.e. performing the role of the lowest servant. When I am secure in my identity with God and therefore need nothing from you, then I am free to be your servant. My point is God has set up our whole belief system to HAVE ETERNITY ALWAYS IN VIEW!!
As a Christian you were designed to have a sense of eternity in your heart: - When you lost that, you lose the joy of the Lord and that’s where your strength is.
